Dirk Waem grew up in Antwerp and graduated from Karel De Grote College, where he studied Photography (2004). A television documentary on war photographer James Nachtwey had a powerful effect on him and was an important key in his decision to become a photojournalist. He completed his education in a masterclass documentary photography at the Noordelicht Photofestival in Groningen, The Netherlands.
He started working as a freelance photojournalist for Belgian national news agency BELGA in 2005. In 2008 he joined the photo staff of BELGA. As a staff photographer he covers all important news and sport events in Belgium as well as all news events involving Belgians abroad, such as sports fixtures, official journeys by members of the Royal family or the government.
His work is published in Belgian and international newspapers, magazines, internet sites and books.
In 2008 he was awarded with the Nikon Promising Young Photographer Award.
